WARRINGTON council is warning businesses about the correct way to dispose of waste after a Lymm based business was fined for making use of a public recycling facility.
The council is urging businesses in the borough to make arrangements, via a licensed waste contractor, to ensure that their waste is disposed of correctly. Failure to do this can result in fines of up to £50,000.
A local business in Lymm was recently fined for illegally disposing their commercial waste at a council recycling site at Davies Way, Lymm. The waste, which was found dumped on the ground, was traced back to the business and enforcement action was taken.
Cllr David Keane, (pictured right) executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “We want to help local businesses to comply with the law and we operate a commercial recycling service to assist them in disposing of their recyclable waste correctly. Action will be taken, however, against those businesses who flout the law or who fail to make adequate arrangements for disposing of their commercial waste.
The recycling sites are for household waste only and they play a vital role in helping residents to recycle their waste. I would urge everyone to help us to protect these important facilities by using the containers provided correctly; as misuse of these sites costs over £8,000 per year and it affects our ability to achieve our overall recycling targets.”
Recycling facilities have recently changed at Davies Way and other recycling sites in Warrington.
Residents can now recycle glass, cans, plastic bottles and tetrapak together in the large yellow containers that were previously for plastic bottles only. For more information about recycling visit www.recycleforwarrington.co.uk
