EMPTY baby wipe packets are being collected throughout Warrington to help raise funds for the brain tumour charity Ellie’s Fund.
Local families are turning waste into cash for the charity. Collections are being made at local baby classes at TinyTalk baby signing, SureStart Children’s Centre and nurseries and groups.
Packets are recycled into plastic bibs, dustbins and watering cans. In less than 12 months the charity has raised more than £10,000 from collections around the country.
Thérèse Markham, a baby signing teacher, set up the Warrington collection point as Ellie’s mum Heather had also been a TinyTalk teacher.
Thérèse said: “Heather lost Ellie to brain cancer when she was only 14, but has found the strength to go on and do amazing work increasing awareness about childhood brain cancer and fundraising to support families with children who have the condition and for much needed research. More children in the UK now die from a brain tumour than any other cancer.
“In my classes I see a lot of mums and dads with babies who go through a lot of baby wipes! The packets aren’t recyclable locally so it’s great to be able to raise money and recycle at the same time and the families have been brilliant at bringing them in.”
The fund gets two pence for each packet. Details of the Warrington collections are on https://www.facebook.com/WipeoutwasteforElliesFundWarrington
Thérèse said: “So far I have sent off over 50 boxes of empty packets totalling over 17,000 packets. But it is an ongoing collection so more are always welcome!”
