Old folk told: keep active

OLDER residents in Warrington are being encouraged to take steps to ensure they enjoy an active, independent and good quality life.
Warrington’s Public Health Team has launched a “Healthy Ageing” campaign. They have developed 11 top tips, which can help prevent ill health and can keep people healthy and independent.
The initiative will also highlight key contact numbers for trusted local services that can provide support, to help keep older people well and independent.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council executive member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Healthy Ageing is a key initiative and an important step forward to giving people the skills and information they need in order to prevent ill health and stay as well and healthy as possible.
“We know the number of people over 65 living in Warrington will significantly increase over the next 20 years and this in itself will bring huge challenges to the town. Remaining well, healthy and independent will not only improve the quality of people’s lives but will undoubtedly help us cope better with the future.”
The tips include having flu jabs and health screening to prevent illnesses such as bowel cancer. People are also advised to keep their home warm in winter, eat healthily, avoid alcohol and get safe exposure to the sun.
Other advice covers reducing the risk of falling and having medication reviewed.
There is also information on recognising the signs and symptoms of depression and dementia, keeping involved in the community and checking benefits.
The campaign gives details on how equipment and minor alterations to a property may help people remain safe at home. Information is available at Warrington Borough Council website www.mylifemyway.co.uk.
