Police authority sign off

MEMBERS of Cheshire Police Authority have “signed off” with an illustrated account of the achievements of the authority over the past 17 years.
“Leaving a Legacy” details the development and success of policing in Cheshire from the time the Authority was established in 1995 to its replacement by the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire on Thursday.
Copies will be available in libraries, universities and the Cheshire Police Museum.
Authority chairman Margaret Ollerenshaw said, “The title reflects the fact that we laid down the foundations of policing for the 21st Century.
“We invested in a new approach to tackling crime and anti social behaviour, modernised police buildings and equipment and made sure that the views of local communities were always reflected in the decisions taken by the authority and in the Chief Constable’s policing objectives.
“Working closely with the Constabulary we introduced neighbourhood policing, the bedrock of policing in Cheshire today.
“The 28 page document sets out the authority’s history in brief, year by year. Anyone reading it can see how the authority has been committed to delivering efficient and effective police services to protect the people of Cheshire and ensure their safety; how we invested in developing the way officers tackle anti-social behaviour, local crime and serious organised crime.
“It also shows how we faced up to the need to replace police headquarters, modernise police stations and set up custody suites and how we have taken a positive approach to finding the savings demanded by Government reductions in police funding.
“We are leaving a year-on-year reduction in crime and a robust financial plan, which will ensure the people of Cheshire continue to receive the standard of policing they expect and deserve.
“Members of the authority are proud of what they achieved.”
