A LYMM man won two races in two weekends – one on wheels and the other on foot.
Stuart Baird, 67, won the HSCC Formula Ford race at Silverstone and followed it up a week later by winning the Veterans Class in the International OMM Mountain Marathon.
At Silverstone ,Stuart won the final round of the Formula Ford Championship in a closely fought race, beating all the championship favourites, most of who were much less than half his age.
Stuart who was a top runner in both single seater and saloon car racing in the 1970s, only returned to racing this year following a 35 year layoff.
Throughout that time he never lost the urge to return to the race track, so after retiring from full time work he bought a Merlyn Mk11A Formula Ford and set about regaining some of his old speed, which he proved at Silverstone was still there.
His other passion is fell running and the following weekend he competed in the International OMM Mountain Marathon with his running partner, Lymm dentist Barry Clayton. They were winners of the Veterans Class.
This year’s race was held in the Howgill Fells and was run over two days where competitors ran 60 kms involving 8,000 feet of climbing.
Competitors had to carry their own tent/clothes/food etc and were required to sleep out on the fells overnight.
It was the third time Stuart and his partner had won this prestigious event.
