WARRINGTON’S fallen heroes were among those remembered during the annual service of remembrance at the war memorial on Bridge Foot today.
Large crowds attended the service at the Cenotaph on Bridge Foot as those who have given their lives during various conflicts around the world were remembered.
Various wreaths were laid including one in memory of Private Thomas Sephton, 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, who died in July 2010 of wounds sustained during service in Afghanistan. He was wounded in an explosion while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
Others remembered included Marine Steven Birdsall, from Great Sankey, a former pupil of Great Sankey High School, who was shot and killed in June of the same year and 20-year-old Daniel Wade, the former Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School pupil, who was one of six British soldiers killed by a massive Taliban bomb in Afghanistan earlier this year.
Other wreaths included ones laid by families of those who lost their lives in World War II, including one for Pvt William Parton, from the 1st Btn Glasgow Highland Regiment who was killed in action on April 5 1945.
Wreaths were laid by the Mayor of Warrington Cllr Steve Wright, Lord of Hoyle of Warrington, the town’s two MPs Helen Jones and David Mowat, and council representatives, Interim Chief Executive Steven Broomhead, Labour’s Deputy Leader Cllr Mike Hannon, Lib Dem Leader Ian Marks and Tory leader Paul Kennedy.
