THE Rugby League World Cup trophy will be brought to Warrington Town Hall on Monday to mark the one year countdown to the tournament.
Jon Dutton from the RFL, organisers of the event, will bring the silverware to a meeting of the full council.
On the same day the official host town flag will be hoisted above the Town Hall for the first time.
A Samoan representative will also attend as the South Pacific team will be holding their pre-tournament training camp in Warrington next year.
During the next six weeks the cup is travelling across the UK. Before it comes to the borough it will be in Wrexham for the England v Wales match, and the day after will be taken to London to the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of the council, said: “I am tremendously proud of our successful bid to be a host town and I know we’re going to show the world the very best we have to offer. This event will be the point where it all becomes real for us and I can’t wait for it to kick off.”
Tournament director Nigel Wood said: “As part of our promotional plans for the tournament, the trophy will travel around the UK throughout the rest of 2012 and on into next year – right up to the first game at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on October 26 2013.
“We’d like to thank reigning champions New Zealand for giving us the opportunity to take the trophy on the road in this way.”
