A GROUP of fundraisers from Warrington-based United Utilities has presented a local cancer charity with a cheque worth £3,710 after completing a challenging bike ride.
United Utilities employees Joanne Coote and Alan Sutton visited the Liverpool head office of North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF) on behalf of the 11 strong team who took part in the challenge.
They presented the fundraising cheque to the charity’s chief executive, Anne Jackson.
This summer the team from the company’s HQ in Great Sankey, sat in the saddle for two days as they pedalled a gruelling 90 miles to raise funds for NWCRF and Cheshire Wildlife Trust. In total they raised more than £4,500.
The bikers followed the route of the Vrynwy Aqueduct, starting at Lake Vyrnwy and cycling 25 miles to Oswestry. The following day they completed the challenge by cycling 65 miles to the finish line in Prescot.
The group, made up of both experienced and novice cyclists, had trained for three months for their big weekend.
Joanne Coote, United Utilities project co-ordinator of Vyrnwy LDTM’s, said: “Thank you to everyone who sponsored us. This was a physically and mentally demanding challenge but we’re thrilled to have raised money for two worthy causes. We’re a close team so it was fun to train together and it’s a pleasure to be able to present this cheque.”
Anne Jackson said: “I cannot thank the team from United Utilities enough for dedicating their time and effort to fundraise for us. We raise money in the North West to fund vital cancer research here in the North West and almost all money raised is by voluntary means so we are extremely grateful to receive this donation.”
The fundraisers are working on a 10-year project to renew and refurbish water pipes along the Vrynwy Aqueduct – important water mains which supply up to 210 million litres of water a day to 900,000 people in Cheshire and Merseyside.
