Urgent review of Bridgefoot fiasco

AN urgent review of issues arising from the recent Bridgefoot roundabout fiasco has been ordered by senior councillors at Warrington.
It will be carried out by interim chief executive of the council, Professor Steven Broomhead.
This follows last week’s instruction by senior elected members of the council to officers in the highways team to change the controversial new road markings in Wilson Patten Street.
Leader of the council Terry O’Neill said: “The purpose of this exercise is to challenge ourselves and identify any areas for improvement following the concerns expressed by members of the public.”
The report will look at accountability, communications and costs. It is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
A summary of the findings will be made public via www.warrington.gov.uk
There was uproar when road markings on Wilson Patten Street and Bridgefoot left drivers confused and having to guess which lane they should be in.
As a result, councillors met with council officers and ordered that the work be done again – and it was carried out overnight on Monday.
The initial work cost more than £25,000 and the repainting job an additional £5,000.
A number of minor accidents are reported to have occurred as a result of the confusion.

  1. A summary of the findings is inadequate – it is OUR money that was wasted and we have the right to see the FULL report, even If Councillor O’Neill’s colleagues on the council are afraid of being embarassed.

  2. This whole fiasco is an absoluite disgrace. Where do these prices come from? £25K for the scheme in total – for painting white lines!!! This is money that WBC do not have. In private industry the culprits would be dealt with but we are not being told who is to blame and certainly it will happen again at WBC. Because there is no committee structure in place at WBC officers are not scrutinised in detail and they certainly run the Council despite what we are told by Councillor O’Neill. He should get in the real world or giv e his position to someone who is.

  3. “The purpose of this exercise is to challenge ourselves and identify any areas for improvement following the concerns expressed by members of the public.” How can they challenge themselves if they are the ones who are going to “look at accountability, communications and costs” – which they have incurred? Who was it that compared WBC’s investigations to Turkeys voting on Christmas?
