The 15-year-old was on marshland off Burtonwood Road, Great Sankey when he became trapped in mud up to his left hip.
Fire and rescue crews from Warrington and Widnes and a rope rescue crew from Knutsford were involved in the operation, which involved digging the youngster out by hand. He was not seriously harmed.
In a separate incident, two fire crews from Warrington went to Valley Court following reports of a smell of burning inside a dwelling.
It was found to have been caused by a Chinese lantern on the roof. Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check for fire in the loft space. There was no damage.
