Praise for the police

CHESHIRE Police has received praise for its preparations for the new role of Police and Crime Commissioner.
The force has been given a vote of confidence for the work from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary.
The new commissioners will be elected on November 15 to replace Police Authorities across England and Wales. They will hold Chief Constables to account, decide local policing objectives, monitor performance, set police budgets and the local police council tax.
The Home Secretary said commissioners need to “hit the ground running” and each Police Authority should anticipate what the local commissioner will need to ensure this happens.
Cheshire Police Authority chairman Margaret Ollerenshaw said: “From the outset, we have been determined to ensure that the transition will be seamless and we are working hard to ensure that happens.
“We are looking at every detail of what the change will mean to the constabulary, partners, staff and the public of Cheshire. We need to be sure that all issues are thought through.”
She said everything will be in place to ensure Cheshire people get the high standard of policing they are used to.
In Cheshire, the inspectorate found a clear transition plan, action being taken to mitigate key risks, work options considered, plans to adequately brief candidates and good involvement of local authorities and partners. Steps are also being taken to keep the public involved.
