THE chairman of governors at a Warrington primary school collapsed and died during rugby training at the school.
Phil James was chairman of governors at Oakwood Avenue Primary School and also secretary of the Oakwood Steelers junior RL club which was launched only a couple of months ago.
Headteacher Gary Cunningham has issued a tribute on behalf of the school following Mr James’ death last week.
He said: “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the sudden and tragic death of Phil James who died on Tuesday July 24 during our school rugby training.
“Phil was not only our chair of governors, but also a friend and great supporter of the school.
“Rugby league was his favourite pastime. His commitment to rugby development with our children, resulted in many sporting successes throughout the year and the creation of Oakwood Steelers.
“Phil will be greatly missed by everyone here at school and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
“Finally, I would like to say it has been a privilege and an honour to work with such a dedicated and passionate person. Oakwood Avenue Primary School is a much better place due to the hard work and dedication of Phil James.”
Mr James had set up Oakwood Steelers in partnership with coach Josh Woods to provide a club for youngsters interested in joining a rugby league club but not confident enough to join an existing club.
He had planned for the club would to be playing competitively by next March.
