A group of fundraisers from Warrington-based United Utilities have completed a challenging bike ride to raise funds for two local charities, including North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF).
The team from the water company’s headquarters in Great Sankey were in the saddle for two days as they pedalled a gruelling 90 miles.
But it was all worthwhile as they raised more than £3,000, which is to be split between their chosen charities – NWCRF and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
The bikers followed the route of the Vrynwy Aqueduct, starting at Lake Vyrnwy and cycling 25 miles to Oswestry.
The following day they completed the challenge by cycling 65 miles to the finish line in Prescot.
The group, made up of avid and novice cyclists, had been in training for three months for the ride.
One of the cyclists, project manager Mike Holme, said: “We wanted a tough challenge, and something that would give us the chance to raise money for two really worthy causes. We’re a close team and it was great to spend time together on achieving something so rewarding.”
Anne Jackson, chief executive of NWCRF said: “Primary research funded by the charity is vital in finding a cure for cancer that affects one in three of us. Almost all money raised for the charity is by voluntary means so we are extremely grateful for the team at United Utilities for fundraising for us.”
Dr Janel Fone, chief executive of Cheshire Wildlife Trust said: “We’re delighted that United Utilities have chosen to support us, especially in this, our 50th anniversary year.”
