WARRINGTON Wolves opened up a three point gap at the top of Super League with a stunning 6-24 victory at the home of reigning Champions and arch rivals Wigan.
The Wolves out muscled Wigan in every department with tries from centre Matty Blythe, two from winger Joel Monaghan and a long range interception effort from half-back Richie Myler, which effectively killed the game off 15 minutes from time.
Although still early days Warrington are now being tipped as hot favourites to reach the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
The first try arrived after just seven minutes after a high shot from Andy Coley on Richie Myler gifted Warrington good attacking field position. Moments later the ball was shipped out wide and Matty Blythe was in at the corner, with Brett Hodgson knocking over a touchline conversion.
Wigan youngster Josh Charnley twice knocked on two Lee Briers high kicks but both times Wigan survived close to their own sticks and then levelled midway through the half when Brett Finch scored on his debut, the Australian half-back collecting his own grubber kick off the post to score.
But Warrington continued to dominate and their second try was a mirror image of the first only this time in was Monaghan in at the same corner from Blythe’s pass, with Hodgson converting from a near identical position.
The first score after the break was to prove crucial and it went Warrington’s way. Again Charnley failed to deal with Briers’ kick and this time it proved costly, as Monaghan leapt highest to collect the ball and twist over the line to score.
The game was settled 15 minutes from time when Sean O’Loughlin hurled out a speculative long pass and Myler raced forward to claim the ball and run 60 metres to score under the posts.
After the game a delighted Tony Smith enthused about his team’s defence and heralded live-wire hooker Michael Monaghan as the “best player in the country!”
