Council to turn off lights – for an hour

WARRINGTON Borough Council is set to take part in World Wildlife Fund’s “Earth Hour” between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday (March 26).
During Earth Hour people all over the world will be turning off their lights to show they care about protecting the natural world and to urge world leaders to take action to tackle climate change.
Last year more than 120 local authorities in the UK took part and this year is the fourth year running Warrington has been one of them.
The council will be ensuring an extra special effort is made to turn off all lights in their buildings.
Cllr Mike Biggin, executive member for climate change and public protection, said: “Earth Hour is a great opportunity to help make a difference by simply turning out our lights for an hour and I encourage everyone to get involved.
“This simple idea is an effective way to send a clear message to world leaders about the need to protect the natural world. The council is working hard to tackle climate change on a number of fronts and is proud to be involved with Earth Hour.”

  1. PS. It would be a lot better if they didn’t turn the lights on at 7.30 am in all buildings, whether they are needed or not. Waste of money and it seems to be standard practise.

  2. It’s not their fault that ‘Earth Hour’ is on a Saturday night !? And how many of us leave lights on unintentionally or have lights on when we don’t really need too 😉

  3. Flourescent lights use as much power when they’re first switched on than they do in several hours of running. The net result of turning them all off for an hour will be a BIGGER electricity bill!. I wish these politicians would spend 5 minutes talking to someone with some knowledge before spouting their hair-brained ideas. (or would that expose them too much to the “inconvenient truth” about the global warming con?) Besides, heating uses far more power than lighting. Turn that down a bit, don’t heat or air condition unused areas, keep doors and windows shut, and much bigger savings will be generated.

  4. They could turn all the traffic lights off across the town… traffic would be free flowing, there would be no accidents and they will save a few hundred k too.

  5. Another hair-brained idea. Is that the best that officers at WBC can do? Some of the comments above need careful assessment and they would result in much greater savings for us all. Do we have to be trteated a sidots by this buch of prats who are supposed to be working on our behalf?
