WARRINGTON Wolves boss Tony Smith has announced his 19 man squad to kick off the new Super League season at this weekend’s spectacle at the Millennium Stadium.
The Wolves will help launch the weekend as the opening fixture against Huddersfield Giants, as new signing Brett Hodgson lines up against his old club.
But there are no places for hooker Jon Clarke (pictured left) and winger Chris Riley (pictured right) in the 19.
Smith said: “We are very proud to be the first game of the weekend. Basically we’re kicking off Super League with what should be great game against Huddersfield. We’ve had some really good matches with them over the last couple of years and have built up a good rivalry. They are a very good team and we know that we have to play well in order to compete with Huddersfield on their day. We are very excited about the weekend and are looking forward to it. It’s a great atmosphere down there. It’s a unique situation where all games are on in one weekend. It’s a real feast of Rugby League.”
Warrington will face their 2009 Challenge Cup final opponents and the team which knocked them out of the play-offs last year. Tony and the team are expecting a tough match.
“We expect Huddersfield to be very strong again. They are a very good, consistent team. They work hard every week for 80 minutes and that’s what you’ve got to do to compete. We’ll certainly know we’ve been in a game every time we play the Giants. What’s happened in the past won’t account for too much come Saturday afternoon.”
