WARRINGTON Wizards continued their fine run with a hard fought 35-20 victory over Huddersfield Underbank Rangers in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference National at Wilderspool Stadium on Saturday afternoon to remain in second place in the league table, three points behind Bramley Buffaloes.
The Wizards led 16-4 at half time, but a poor start to the second half saw them concede three tries to trail 20-16 after an hour, but a storming final quarter saw them run in three tries of their own to complete an impressive win.
The Man of the Match was Wolves centre Matt Taylor who played most of the game in the second row due to injuries. He was well supported by Jono Smith, Ryan Millington and Warren Ayres.
Tries: Danny Shaw 1, Anthony Braide 1, Graham Healey 1, Jono Smith 1, Craig Middlemore 1, Danny Burgan 1.
Goals: Warren Ayres 5 from 6 Drop Goal: Ian Stephenson 1
After the game Assistant Coach Mike Grady said, “We were not at our best today by any stretch of the imagination but I think that the heat had a lot to do with that. The lads gave their all and you can’t ask more than that. We were disrupted early on losing Matt Wilson and Alan Reddecliff to injury which meant that some players had to have longer spells on the field than we would have liked. We also lost Danny Shaw late on and he will be out for 4-6 weeks now which is a big blow. We travel to Hemel Stags next Sunday which will be another tough game but one we are more than capable of winning if we play to our full potential.”
