SINGER and pianist Margaret Ferguson is performing at Summerville Nursing Home, Stockton Heath tomorrow (Sunday).
The performance has been arranged by Music in Hospitals which organises some 5,000 concerts throughout the UK each year, bringing the benefits of live music to adults and children whose lives are restricted by illness or disability.
Known as Africa’s Lady of Song, Margaret was born in Ghana, West Africa. After studying the piano and then the cello, she finally made singing her career.
After singing in a number of Embassies and High Commissioners residences, plus a special solo concert for Prince Edward in Ghana, the British High Commissioner awarded her a “Chevening Scholarship” to study opera at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Up to her arrival there in 1994 she had never even heard an opera.
Since then she has sung to great acclaim all over the British Isles, plus Paris and the United States.
She was a member of the Commonwealth Games Choir in 2002 and has remained a member of the outgrowth of that choir, the Manchester Gospel Choir.
Diana Greenman, chief executive of Music in Hospitals said: “There is recognition in the healthcare profession that exposure to high quality live music produces clear and measurable benefits in patients, residents and clients with a wide range of conditions. Music in Hospitals engages professional musicians whose high standard of musicianship and communication skills aid the healing process and bring warmth and joy into the lives of sick and disabled adults and children across the UK.”
