Stamping out doorstep crime

POLICE are putting their foot in the door of distraction burglars who trick their way into houses and prey on the elderly and vulnerable in and around Warrington.
Not Sure?…Don’t Open The Door! is the message at the heart of Operation Liberal’s awareness campaign against distraction burglars.
The national campaign, sponsored by the Energy Retail Association (ERA), aims to make people aware of the tactics used by distraction burglars and how they can prevent themselves from becoming potential victims.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan, of Warrington police, said: “Any form of burglary is disturbing as it targets people in the place they should feel safest – their home.
“But distraction burglaries and bogus caller incidents are particularly despicable as the offenders deliberately set out to cause misery to innocent people – most often targeting the elderly and vulnerable.
“We would urge all residents to be extra vigilant when answering the door to any unexpected callers. Ensure that you always use a door chain when answering the door always ask for – and check – the identification of people claiming to be working for a company or organisation.
“If the caller is genuine they will expect this and will be only too happy to provide some form of identification. If you are still unsure of their identity, ask them to wait while you call the company they claim to be representing – but do not rely on any number they give you as this could be false. If you are still not satisfied, call the police immediately.
“In Warrington, officers are successfully tackling this type of crime but despite this there are still criminals who are prepared to prey on some of the most vulnerable members of society.”
Anyone who see anything suspicious, or who has been a victim of doorstep crime, is asked to call police on 0845 458 0000. Information can also be passed on anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
