WOLVES fans attending Warrington’s game against Crusaders on Sunday will be given tips on how to stop smoking.
NHS Warrington, Warrington Wolves and the Wolves Foundation use the game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium to mark the first phase of the Tackling Health campaign.
It will raise awareness of March 10 National No Smoking Day and offer support to fans who wish to quit.
Advisors from Warrington’s Stop Smoking Service will be present to offer advice and support, whilst advising those who want to quit how to enrol into the service.
Fusion Elite, The Wolves Foundation community dance team will provide entertainment at the game wearing No Smoking tee-shirts to promote the message.
Brigid Middlehurst, lifestyle specialist and smoking cessation advisor, said: “We realise giving up smoking is sometimes difficult to do on your own, willpower alone is not always enough and the motivational support, information and advice we provide can really make a difference.”
Wolves player Lee Briers is pledging his support and said: “Being an ex-smoker myself I’ve noticed a great number of benefits to my lifestyle since giving up. You live a much healthier life by not putting those toxins into your body.
“It is important to be a role model to my children and other young people. They need to realise that it is not big or clever to smoke and not to crack under peer pressure. Why would you want to risk cutting your life short?”
Further stop smoking events planned include Monday March 8, Whitecross Community Centre 10am to 3pm, also with NHS Warrington’s Weight Management Team.
Tuesday March 9, a mobile cancer information and support vehicle will be present on the corner of Hawley’s Lane/Longshaw Street in Dallam from 9:30am to 2pm and at Harrison Square, Dallam, 2pm to 4:30pm.
The following day from 10am to 3pm, the Fire Service Information Van will be parked outside Starbucks in Warrington town centre. Stop smoking and fire safety advice will be on offer.
On Thursday March 11, from 9am to12 midday, there will be a drop-in at Longford Community Centre Café.
