MP slams council over litter

DOG mess and litter strewn around the streets are a symptom of Warrington Borough Council’s “neglect” according to a local MP.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones slammed the council for neglecting street cleansing in the north of the town.
She said: “You only have to walk around the area to see the evidence of council neglect. When I’m out and about I see dog mess and litter all over our streets.
“Some look as if they haven’t been swept for weeks and areas where there are bushes and trees are strewn with litter. Clearly, the council has never bothered to clean them.”
She said the council had its priorities wrong and asked members to consider whether they would put up with the problem outside their own homes. It was not good enough for her constituents.
“This council has got its priorities wrong. It wants to spend money on street entertainment and it paid one of its finance officers more than the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but it can’t sweep the streets,” she said.

  1. I rather thought that it was residents who discarded litter, and irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs foul the pavement. Maybe Mrs Jones should target those people and not the Council. Personally I’m fed up with having the council tax that I pay used to clear up other people’s mess.

  2. totally agree, Warrington Eye – people just don’t care about their environment – drop litter even when there’s a bin nearby. As for dog mess – am really fed up with having to avoid it on the pavements. Wonder if those irresponsible owners have ever had to scrape it off their own or their children’s shoes?

  3. I agree too. Although the council do have a responsibility for street cleaning that doesn’t mean they should spend all their time picking up mess that irresponsible and LAZY residents and visitors have just disgarded. It’s not only in the north either Mrs Jones says ‘When I’m out and about I see dog mess and litter all over our streets’…….. does she ever take a bin sack and pick up the litter when she see’s it ??? We do !!

  4. Yet another bandwagon for Ms Irritating, however on this occasion the picture of the rubbish is much more appealing than the usual one of the gobby MP.

  5. Surely our MP should be criticising the people who leave the litter in the first place – and a good number of those will be her constituents. But she dare not point the finger at them because they have votes.

If people behaved in a civilised manner there would be no litter and the council would not need to clean it up.

  6. Nice to see that the lovely Helen points out that one of the councils officers got paid more than the Chancellor……. firstly he probably did a damn sight better job here than Darling did in his job and secondly, she herself probably takes home as much in annual salary and expenses as 25 of her constiuents do in a year. Give up moaning Helen, no one is listenening to you any more
