A BLOCK of retirement flats was evacuated at Warrington last night after fire broke out in a kitchen.
The blaze was at Oulton Court, Knutsford Road, Grappenhall shortly after 6pm.
A man and a woman were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke but there were no other casualties.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze which was in the kitchen of one flat and involved a chip pan left unattended on a cooker.
There was damage caused to the cooker and part of a worktop and smoke damage in the kitchen, but the rest of the flat was unaffected. A ventilation unit was used to clear smoke from the property.
In a separate incident, fire crews went to a house in Westlands Drive, Padgate after a fire broke out involving a handbag which had been left on a cooker. Damage was restricted to the bag and the fire was out by the time firefighters reached the scene. A smoke detector alerted the occupier.
