Public meeting over fire station

FIRE chiefs are holding another public meeting to debate the controversial proposal to end round-the-clock coverage at Birchwood Fire Station.
The meeting is being held at The Centre at Birchwood Park at 6.30pm tonight (Friday)
Cheshire Fire Service chiefs are attempting to ease growing fears that public safety will be jeopardised if Birchwood becomes a part-time fire station.
But the Fire Brigades Union has slammed the proposals – and tonight’s meeting.
A spokesman said: “This will be the third meeting that has been held.
“This one has been called because there was so much criticism of the first two. They were not adequately publicised and were held at inconvenient times.
“Tonight’s meeting is no different. The location is not convenient for most Birchwood people, Friday night is the almost the worst possible night they could have chosen and, in any case, the meeting has again not been publicised adequately.
“We may be cynical but we think they are deliberately trying to ensure a poor turn out.”
Hundreds of people are backing the union’s campaign to keep the station open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
