Death of former councillor

THE death has occurred of former Warrington borough councillor John Thornton.
A Conservative member of the borough council representing the Lymm area between 1991 and 1996, Mr Thornton, was 78.
Prior to local government re-organisation in 1974, he was a member of the former Lymm Urban District Council and, at the time he was first elected, was the youngest-ever member of that authority. He also served as chairman of the council.
Prior to that he had served on the old Bucklow Rural District Council and, when elected, was the youngest councillor in the country.
He was active in community life for many years until suffering a stroke and served as both secretary and treasurer of the former Lymm Conservative Club – now the Bridgewater Club.
His funeral takes place at Altrincham Crematorium on Thursday (February 11) at 1pm.
