Councillor bids to become MP

A BOROUGH councillor at Warrington has been selected to contest the Makerfield Parliamentary constituency for Labour at the General Election.
Yvonne Forargue (pictured) has represented the Fairfield and Howley ward on the borough council since 2004.
She is chief executive of St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau and lives in Warrington with her husband, Coun Paul Kenny.
The Makerfield seat is currently held by Ian McCartney, a former cabinet minister and chairman of the Labour Party who is not seeking re-election.
Ms Fovargue, who has one grown up daughter, said: “I am delighted to have been selected – it’s a huge honour and privilege, but now the hard work really starts to make sure that we retain the seat for Labour in the general election.”
At the 2005 General Election, Mr McCartney held the Makerfield seat with a majority of 18,149 – meaning it is one of the safest Labour seats in the country.

  1. Well, I hope she makes a better MP than she has made a councillor. Six years on the council and you could probably count the times she has spoken on one hand. Still, they say silence is golden!

  2. Warrinton South in five years time after leading Labour back to power in Warrington maybe? The current controlling group aren’t going to hang on once the Tories are back in power nationally – that i have no doubt.

  3. It was an all women shortlist. Guess if you can’t get it yourself because your gender excludes you then next best thing is the wife getting it. Good luck to them. Interestingly it looks like Warrington Borough Council is going to send at least two of it Councillors to Parliament this time round.
