THESE days, Glazebrook railway station stands deserted much of the time.
The ticket office is open weekday mornings only.
Daytime services are at two hourly intervals towards Birchwood and Liverpool Lime Street and at similar intervals towards Irlam and Manchester Oxford Road.
Evening services are more frequent, although most run to and from Warrington Central only.
But 21st century Glazebrook station is pretty quiet compared with the busy M62, just up the road, which carries nose to tail traffic through the village every day, even though the occupants of the vehicles probably have no idea where they are.
The station was built in 1873 and was formerly the junction for the Wigan Joint Railway to Wigan Central and St Helens Central, services to those stations ceasing in 1964 and 1952 respectively.
It was also the junction for the line to Stockport Tiviot Dale, the service to there ceasing in 1964.
Glazebrook is fortunate to have retained its station. Residents of nearby Glazebury were not so lucky and recent efforts to create some interest in re-opening their station near the Chat Moss Hotel have been to no avail.
