Sports village clears two more hurdles

THE £30 million Orford Park Project at Warrington has cleared two important hurdles, opening the way for an early start on building work.
Firstly, the Government Office for the North West has notified the borough council they will not be “calling in” the “sports village” scheme – which means there will not have to be a time-consuming public inquiry.
Additionally, the board of NHS Warrington has given stage one approval to their official commitment to their specific part of the project.
Project manager Duncan Richardson said: “These two pieces of good news enable the project to move forward to the next stage of development.”
Outline planning consent has already been given by the borough’s development control committee.
It is nearly 20 years since the project was first suggested
The scheme includes football pitches, a leisure centre with swimming pool, health centre, local park, library and crèche.
The North West Development Agency has approved an investment of £3.6 million in the scheme and other partners include Sport England, the Football Foundation, Warrington Town FC, NHS Warrington, William Beamont High School and Warrington Collegiate.
The facility is due to open in November 2011.
