A COLLEGE football team is celebrating after winning the North West Colleges’ Cup Final – in dramatic circumstances.
In the final, Warrington’s Priestley College second team despatched their rivals from Holy Cross 1-0 with a goal scored just 60 seconds from the end of extra time, after the normal 90 minutes of play had seen neither side break the deadlock.
In a game dominated by defence, Dan Clarke was the hero as he broke through the opponents’ rearguard to net the only goal of the game.
A total of 30 teams entered the competition with Priestley getting to the final after beating Hopwood Hall and Bury. Their victory in the final was all the more remarkable as Holy Cross had been undefeated in its 15 previous fixtures.
It rounded off a superb year in which Priestley second team was also crowned champions of their respective league – the North West Southern Division.
Coach Rich Donnelly said: “The lads did really well in what was a very tiring final and kept their composure right to the very end with Dan coming up with the all important goal.
“This year has been a great one for the second team, to be able to complete a league and cup double at any level is a very impressive achievement.”
The Priestley squad was Dan Clarke, Daniel Heavey, Matt Burgess, Dale Robinson, Josh Rissotti, Richard Fahey, Ryan Jones, James Bolton, Dean Tan, Matt Foster, Rob Hall, Dave Ansell, Liam Mostyn and Brendan Walsh.
