RAIN wiped out most cricket in the Warrington area, with Chapel Press Cheshire County League matches abandoned without a ball being bowled.
But Grappenhall Over 40s – who played earlier – managed to play at Barnton, boosted by the presence of former England and Lancashire batsman Neil Fairbrother.
Barnton were held to 118-5 by some accurate bowling, Mark Critchley taking 2-11.
Grappenhall raced to victory with 122-2, Fairbrother retiring on 30 and M Roberts on 32.
Fairbrother started his cricket career at the Broad Lane club and retains an association with it.
Appleton were one of the few local sides to play in the Cheshire Alliance when they travelled to Langley.
The home side hit 203-4, Danny Oliver 2-69, Duane Jones 1-61 and Ed Pugh 1-36.
When Appleton batted, opener Antony Hurst followed up his unbeaten century last week with an unbeated 83 while his brother Dave hit 27 not out as Appleton reached 136-4 to earn a draw.
Women’s cricket
Warrington moved to the top of the ECB Women’s Premier League North with a big win at Old Modernians at Leeds.
Dawn Prestidge hit 91 as Warrington amassed 213. The home side were never in the hunt and with Natalie Lyons taking 3-4 and Natalie Long 4-6 were dismissed for 103.
Appleton’s Cheshire league game was washed out, but in the Cheshire Cup contest they progressed to the semi-finals with a 34-run victory at Trafford.
Appleton were held to 80-7, Emma Barlow 25 retired but Trafford were destroyed by Natalie Long, 4-6 and Natalie Lyons, 3-4..
