Titan prison – The lesser of two evils?

0

THE possibility of a giant “Titan” super prison on the Omega site has become a political hot potato.
Let’s face it – who in their right mind would want a prison as their neighbour?
The current “credit crunch” we keep hearing about has resulted in the owners of the land, which was once part of the former US Army airbase at Burtonwood, looking at alternative development opportunities – and the prison plan is the one currently making all the headlines.
Unfortunately if the government decide it is the right location for a prison few would bet against it becoming a reality.
Hundreds of local residents have already signed an online petition and local councillors have also voiced strong opposition.
Unfortuantely local democracy goes out of the window with such a big development as it would get “called in” by a Government inspector who would make a decision based on the “facts.”
Whatever the outcome something will one day be developed on the land. It has previously been earmarked as a car plant, Nato HQ as well as the recent proposals for light industrial/commercial storage facilities. With the current landfill problems, Warrington will one day probably have to have some kind of waste incinerator.
Unfortunately those residents opposing the prison will undoubtedly be faced one day with something nobody would want in their back yard.
I would appeal to our elected members from ALL parties to put on a united front and work together to help represent the views of the people and work towards a solution which will bring the most benefits to our town, while at the same time taking on board the views they are elected to represent.
