Town go down to local rivals

WARRINGTON Town went down 0-1 to local rivals St Helens in their second pre-season friendly, making several changes from Saturday’s victory against AFC Liverpool.
Town started the brighter, with youngster Connor Anderson first to go close, seeing his angled shot hitting the side netting within a minute. Town continued to have the best of the game, with the mazy runs of winger Tom Rutter giving the visitors defence many problems, indeed it was Rutter who shot narrowly wide after good interplay with the returning Chris Gahgan. It was Gahgan who went closest to giving Town the lead, putting in from the left and forcing a fine save out of visiting keeper Woods.
The visitors tested out Towns stand in keeper shortly afterwards. The visitors got into the game and former Town midfielder Iain Dyson went close to putting them ahead, seeing his header rebound off the woodwork. Shortly afterwards, Louis Corrigan went close to his second free kick in two games, as both sides pressed for an opening goal.
Ten minutes before half time, St Helens centre back Kay, leapt unmarked to head home unchallenged in the box. Town created two more half chances before half time, Anderson seeing his chance being scrambled away by the final defender, before, on the stroke of half time, Lee Thompson seeing his pull back cleared before reaching the on rushing Chris Gahgan.
Town had a great chance to equalise soon into the second half, when centre back Tom Hardwick saw his unmarked header fly narrowly over the crossbar. St Helens had a great chance to go further ahead when Foster saw his effort go wide of the far post. Gahgan was next to go close for Town, shooting too close to Woods in the visitors goal. As Town introduced their first three substitutes, the game got stretched somewhat, but try as they might, Town could not find an equalising goal and went down narrowly to their local visitors.
Town travel to local rival Moore FC at Tetley Walker tonight (Thursday) for another pre-season friendly, kick off 7.45pm.

Town: A N Other, Duffy, Corrigan, Hardwick, Tomlinson, Finley, Rutter (Grogan, 68), Kennedy (Ness, 65), Anderson (Salmon, 65), Thompson (Bathurst, 65), Gahgan
