Gliding returns to RAF Burtonwood

GLIDING is set to return to Burtonwood as part of an illustrated lecture on the history of the former Warrington air base.
Bryan Trunkfield, former CO of No 635 Gliding School which was based for many years at Burtonwood training Air Cadets to fly gliders is set to give a talk to members of Burtonwood Association on Monday, February 22.
Bryan was also Director of Liverpool (Speke) Airport and will be bringing two former gliding instructors with him.
This illustrated lecture will be fascinating reminiscing about Burtonwood both from the gliding view and US Army.
Bryan will also be joined by Peter McLachlan who was Commanding Officer after Bryan and also the Senior Engineer at RAF Burtonwood in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s.
His talk will include USAF at Burtonwood, RAF at Burtonwood, US Army at Burtonwood, No 635 RAF Volunteer Gliding School, flying operations at Burtonwood, proposed 2nd main runway, proposed reactivation of flying operations, longest serving force of MoD police, fuel Farms and the water table, the SAS at Burtonwood, subsidence due to mining, myths about buried treasure, the secret arrival of the US Army, mushrooms and much more!
The talk will be illustrated and is free to members but open to non members for a nominal £1.00 per person to join us. It will be held at the Conservative Club, Meeting Lane, Penketh, Warrington, WA5 2BG. Doors open 7.00 for a 7.30pm start. The bar will be open during the evening.
