AFTER just four weeks, 44 Warrington men have lost a staggering 20 stone between them.
They are taking part in the “Fit to Tackle” initiative organised jointly by lifestyle and leisure group LiveWire and Warrington Wolves.
Since the programme was launched at the end of February, the men have been training three times a week, with assistance from LiveWire’s health and wellbeing advisors and fitness professionals from the Warrington Wolves Rugby Team.
Monday evenings include a fitness session and a health education talk at Wolves’ stadium, visits from inspirational speakers including Tony Smith, Wolves’ head coach.
He discussed nutrition, the importance of recovery and working as a team. Upcoming speakers include Men United charity and Warrington Wolves player Mickey Higham.
On Wednesday evenings, the men compete in a friendly touch rugby session at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub, while Saturday mornings are based back at Wolves’ stadium to focus on fitness and strengthening.
Paul Corless, health and wellbeing advisor at LiveWire said: “I am very impressed by how dedicated and committed the men have been to the programme. It’s fantastic to watch their confidence grow each week and see them achieve their weight loss goals.
“The amount of support and praise they give one another is also inspirational -I can’t wait to see how much weight they have lost by the end of the programme.”
Leon Gallagher, from Great Sankey entered the programme as he was fed up of feeling tired and unfit.
He said: “Fit to Tackle has been a blast, I’ve lost one stone in the first four weeks which has motivated me to keep coming back week after week. The group is absolutely great; I’ve made some great friends who spur each other no matter how tired we are. We have all planned to keep training once the 12 weeks has finished. I also plan on coming back as a volunteer for the next group of men that join to help lead fitness sessions and encourage people to lose weight and keep going.”
Due to the success of Fit to Tackle, commissioned by Warrington Public Health for £25,000, LiveWire is accepting sign-ups for future programmes for men between the ages of 30–55 with a BMI over 27.
