A PROPOSED new lighting scheme for Warrington’s oldest public park is to be put to borough planners.
The scheme would involve almost 40 four-metre high traditional lighting columns, painted black, following the partially reinstated path forming the open “events space” in the south western corner of Bank Park.
Nearby residents, park users, bowling clubs and the wider community have been consulted, as well as local councillors.
If approved, the work will be carried out as part of a wider scheme to improve Bank Park, which includes replacing the bowls pavilion with a new one which includes a café, new all-weather bowling greens and a new terrace area.
Bank Park was the first public park in Warrington and was born out of the grounds of Bank Hall – now the Town Hall. The park was opened in 1873.
Although light was not a feature of the original park, it is seen as an aid to protect the amenities from vandalism and anti-social behaviour. English Heritage do not oppose the proposals.
When completed, the park will provide a venue for outdoor events, festivals and other similar activities and improvements to footpath layout, lighting and management of vegetation will encourage footfall and improve self-policing.
