Waste team help raise £12,500 for St Rocco’s

WARRINGTON Waste – the borough council-run refuse collection service – helped raise more than £12,500 for the town’s St Rocco’s Hospice by collecting Christmas trees for re-cycling after the festive period.
It was the third year running that generous staff from the service gave their own time up to collect unwanted trees from homes across North Warrington.
They also donated the use of a number of vans and on January 10, undeterred by windy weather, they collected all the trees.
Waste foreman Nigel Dearden, who co-ordinated the day, said: “We
got involved a few years ago and it’s our way of getting involved with St Rocco’s and of course helping to recycle unwanted trees so it’s a win win for us!
“We are always more than happy to help raise cash for St Rocco’s – we’ve done everything from dragon boat racing to pulling bin wagons!”
Cllr David Keane, the borough council’s lead member for environment and public protection, said: “This is a great and green initiative. I enjoy being part of the team that fundraises for St Rocco’s and continue to feel inspired by all our staff who do this in their own time – it’s a
great display of community spirit.
“St Rocco’s has commended the team for their involvement which has contributed to 1,200 trees being collected and more than £12,500 being raised this year so it is definitely worth it!”
