Rebel pledges common sense politics

REBEL councillor Kevin Bennett, who resigned from the Labour Party to fight the crucial Warrington South seat in the General Election, has spelled out why he thinks voters should choose him on May 7.
He says his campaign will be grounded in “common sense politics” and that no issue will be either too big or too small for him to get involved in.
“My message to the people of Warrington South will be: ‘I’m one of you’” he said.
Cllr Bennett (pictured), a borough councillor for the Howley and Fairfield Ward, quit Labour after a long-running disagreement with the party during which he claimed to have been subject to bullying and harassment.
He said: “Since I left the Labour Party, I have been overwhelmed by messages of support from people who are genuinely enthusiastic about having a Warrington South born and bred candidate standing in this election.
“Now, I want to tell voters what they can expect from me as a Parliamentary candidate in my home constituency.
“My campaign will be grounded in what I call ‘common sense politics’. I won’t be afraid to speak up on the ‘big issues’, but no problem or concern will be too small for me either. When I said I wasn’t a ‘career politician’, I meant it.
“I’m a local man who grew up here, went to school here, and has raised a family here. My children went to Warrington South schools too. What our constituency needs most of all is someone who is grounded here, who understands the choices that ordinary families have to make. I can do that, because I’ve lived here all my life. I will support people who have been hit hardest by the unfair cuts that this Government has subjected us to.”
Cllr Bennett will be standing as a Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate..
Already, since quitting Labour, he has spoken at a Merseyside TUSC meeting, been interviewed for the BBC TV Sunday Politics show, been invited to address Friends of the Earth and Warrington Trades Union Council.
At a meeting at the Kings Head, in Winwick Street, on February 18 at 7pm he plans to announce five pledges for Warrington South, identifying the “big issues” his campaign will focus on.
Anti-austerity, local health services, South Warrington transport issues and the local economy will feature heavily in his literature and leaflets.
