Woodland footpaths to be improved

WOODLAND footpaths in an important wildlife area at Warrington are to be improved with the help of a grant from landfill revenues from recycling charity WREN.
The money has been obtained by the Woodland Trust, owners of Gorse Covert Mounds at Birchwood.
It comes as a major fillip for the Friends of Gorse Covert Mounds, who help maintain the area on a voluntary basis.
Work is expected to start early in November, starting with tree-thinning on either side of the path leading from Birchwood Forest Park and along the mound behind Bramshill, Applecross, Aldewood and Hamsterley closes. Path resurfacing work will follow immediately, with sections closed as necessary using warning signs and barriers.
Nigel Balding, chairman of the Friends group said: “This will make a great improvement for a busy path used by many residents, visitors and commuters.
“The path has become increasingly boggy in the winter and a new surface will last for many years. It has been a pleasure to work on this proposal with Friends group members, local residents and professionals from the Woodland Trust, and I am delighted that we have been successful.
“There will be a certain amount of disruption whilst works take place, but I hope we can work with the Trust to let people know what is happening and minimise the impact.”
Woodland Trust site manager Neil Oxley added: “We’re grateful to WREN for providing this funding which will make a huge difference to the woods, which have become a real community asset. We take on the care and ownership of woods to ensure they can be used by all and Gorse Covert is a fantastic example.”
