School has capacity to improve

AN improvement plan aimed at driving up standards at a Warrington primary school said to “require improvement” is having a positive effect.
The plan was put into action at St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Orford after a recent inspection by education watchdog Ofsted.
Inspectors noted that the school’s capacity to improve further was good and that clear actions for improving the quality of teaching to make sure
that pupils’ achievement becomes consistently good across the school are the first priority of the plan.
Behaviour of pupils was said to be good and pupils were caring,
respectful and polite; they were proud of their school and welcomed the chances they had to take responsibility.
In terms of the quality of teaching, the inspectors noted note that all teachers in post display high expectations and commitment to improving the quality of pupil’s learning; literacy is taught well and parents overwhelmingly believe that their children are well taught.
The report highlights that the governors have worked tirelessly and successfully with senior leaders, the local authority and diocese since the last inspection to see the school improve further.
This valuable expertise and support from partners will remain to ensure the rapid progress continues and children receive the best education
now.
Recommendations for further improvement include raising pupils’ achievement and accelerating their progress by ensuring that they are provided with more opportunities to develop and apply their phonic skills and that marking of pupil’s work consistently shows them how to improve.
Acting headteacher Wendy McKinnon said: “We accept the Ofsted report and welcome the recommendations on how to improve as everyone at the school is determined and committed to drive up standards and provide our pupils with the best education.
“I am pleased that the inspectors noted that improvements to the quality of teaching and pupils’ achievements have made good progress and that this demonstrates that we can improve further.
Chairman of governors Rachel Brougham said: “Governors fully support the headteacher and staff as we make positive changes to improve standards further. Actions to address the areas identified as needing improvement are already in place and were recognised by the inspectors in their judgement that the school’s capacity to continue to improve is
good.”
