Signs

WE live in a world full of ‘signs’, they tell us what to do, what not to do, how to do things; we may even feel controlled by them. They are everywhere we look as we drive or walk to our destinations, as we shop, socialise, within all forms of media.
Our external world bombards us during every waking hour with constant information, and some of us go to sleep listening to it! However, our brains can only retain so much information, then we switch off from the implicit messages that signs are there to convey.
For instance, when some new 20 mile per hour road signs were being installed on the side roads near to our home, we wondered whether people could actually drive any faster down roads which had parked cars either side and tight junctions. So were these signs another waste of tax-payers money? We felt perplexed as we reflected on the rapid increase of signs all around us, and wondered if people actually noticed them, and if so, did they adhere to the message on the sign.
Are we, as a nation getting to a point of information overload! If so, does that also impact on us being open to ‘signs’ that can ultimately help us to have a better quality of life? What about the ‘signs’ that help us to choose the right path in life, to grasp opportunities as they arise, to embrace change which is healthy for us. Are we becoming too blinkered in our view of the world which is consumer focussed, and constantly changing rules and regulations?
It seems that perhaps most of us are becoming more discerning, and do still think for ourselves, rather than being told what to do and think. Good old fashioned common sense and morals need to over-ride a media led society, in order to read the important signs for our wellbeing as individuals and ensure we interact with others in a meaningful and caring way.
What ‘signs’ may we be referring to? Positive statements from those who guide us and want the best for us; career opportunities that help us to grow and develop in meaningful ways; spiritual and philosophical messages that are all around us, which we often miss when we are stressed and anxious; the simple things in life, and loving interactions with others.
For instance, people often say that children are our best teachers. Their innocent questioning, openness and creativity can encourage us to recognise what is important to us. When a person feels child-like and are happy and relaxed, they can then be open to observing and hearing the signs which impact strongly on a personal sense of self and increased awareness of future wants and needs.
Spend a few moments each day noticing the variety of signs around you, and make a note of which have no obvious meaning to you; those which you need to adhere to; and then allow yourself to be open to the signs which you wholeheartedly need to be more aware of. Ask your higher consciousness for inner guidance for the ‘signs’ that are most relevant to you and your life now.
