WARRINGTON Paralympian Adrian Derbyshire has been awarded £5,000 from Cheshire’s Crime Prevention Fund – to enable him to complete a tour of the country by hand trike raising awareness of hate crime.
The award has been made by Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer.
The wheelchair sword fencer will travel around Warrington and then to Land’s End by hand trike, visiting schools to raise awareness of his campaign to report hate crime, promoting disability awareness and encouraging a “Can Do” and “I Can” attitude.
Adrian said: “It’s support from the Commissioner and Cheshire Police as a whole which inspires me to continue my Ambassador role regarding Hate Crime and the promotion of reporting it.
“The Crime Prevention Funds given provide me the opportunity to speak to more children, communities and schools, it allows me to outreach to those who need support the most.”
Mr Dwyer said: “I think this is an excellent project and the work Adrian does to raise the awareness of hate crime is inspirational.”
He said he had spoken to a number of victims of hate crime in Cheshire and some of the incidents they had been involved in were harrowing to hear.
“I want to make sure that victims of hate crime feel confident enough to report incidents to the police, so they can be dealt with in the appropriate manner.
“I want to wish Adrian all the best with his campaign.”
There is still money available from the Commissioner’s Crime Prevention Fund. Anyone with a project or initiative in mind that will help make Cheshire safer visit www.cheshire-pcc.gov.uk to find out more information about the Crime Prevention Fund.
