A TOP Tory is calling for full, open and frank talks on the future of bus company Network Warrington.
Paul Campbell, political spokesman for Warrington North Conservatives and a member of Culcheth Parish Council, says the talks should involve all interested parties – the borough council, Network Warrington management, employees, unions and the public.
He said the end of the recent series of bus strikes had come as a great relief to residents.
“The strikes have caused significant hardship to bus travellers as well as disrupting traffic in general and harming local businesses.
“Now that the immediate strike issue is over we need a far reaching review of the situation.
“Last year the bus company reportedly lost £1 million and was bailed out by a ‘loan’ from Warrington Borough Council, and it is difficult to see how the company is not continuing to run at a loss this year as well. With only so much council tax money to go around, the worry is that if the council continues to pour money into the bus company, then the money will eventually have to come out of funds for council services.”
Cllr Campbell (pictured) said a number of questions needed answering.
These included:
*What are the financial projections for the bus company, will the company continue to make a loss this year and when will it be able to repay the loan?
* How much money will the reported 1.5 per cent increase in wages cost?
* About the future, has either Warrington Borough Council or Network Warrington management or directors had any discussions with any private sector bus operators, and if so what are the options being considered?
