RAF visit for Computing students

THE ICT team from the Royal Air Force paid a visit to Warrington Collegiate to introduce students to a job with a difference.

Corporal Grant Smith visited Computing students to tell them about the opportunity to gain qualifications, travel the world and gain much sought after employability skills.

He said: “The RAF polices the skies, protecting the UK from threats at home whilst peacekeeping abroad. ICT technicians are the key to making that happen: they set up, operate and maintain the complex network of communication, radar and information systems around the world that the RAF relies on to communicate.”

Following a presentation Grant and Mark Williams, Senior Aircraftsman Technician, fielded a multitude of questions from students interested to discover if this could be a job for them.

Mark added: “Students from colleges are up to date with the newest technologies and keen and eager to get started on their career as well as embracing the travelling that goes with the job. I started straight from college four years ago and in that time have gained qualifications, experience and a wide range of employability skills.”

Maggie Adepetun, Lecturer in ICT said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for my learners to learn about another career path for them to consider on leaving college.  It is vitally important that learners investigate and experience careers that they maybe didn’t consider an option when starting their course.  The RAF presentation this morning certainly interested and excited most of the learners and we look forward to working with the RAF in the future”

Luke Kevitt, aged 18 from Great Sankey and studying the Extended Diploma in ICT, added: “This is a really exciting opportunity. I would be doing the job I love as well as being able to travel the world, another of my ambitions. I keep myself fit doing weights so I’m well prepared for the fitness levels required for the armed services.”
