Youngsters learn how to look after their hearts

PUPILS at Woolston CofE Primary School have been given an insight on the best ways to look after their hearts by Warrington and Halton Hospital’s Cardiologist Dr Ahmed Farag.

The special lesson was part of the WHH Smart Heart programme, which has now been delivered by Dr Farag to over 4300 local school children. The 26 children in class 4, aged 8 and 9, learned about the dangers of smoking, how to eat well and why it’s important to move more to keep their hearts healthy.

Class 4 teacher Miss Meredith, said after the talk: “Dr Farag’s Smart Heart talk is motivating and engaging! By the end of the presentation the children understood why it is so important not to smoke. Hearing from a Cardiologist first hand really brings the presentation to life!”

Dr. Farag said: “Smart Heart is an informative and fun way of helping children to understand how a small change and healthy choices can help people to make the change and avoid having to meet people like me at some point in the future! The heart is our companion for life and we should all be looking after
them.”

Meanwhile it’s Love your Heart Month at WHH and social media throughout February, is highlighting the ways to look after your heart including stopping smoking, moving more, eating well and knowing your blood pressure and what has an impact on it. Short films and tips from Dr Farag will appear throughout the month of February along with recipes and facts around heart disease.

There are over seven million people in the UK living with cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and stroke and many of the contributing factors are lifestyle choices.
