Planners move to protect historic building from lead thieves

PLANNING chiefs have given the go-ahead for the replacement of lead on the roof of Warrington’s historic Walton Hall – to help safeguard the building from lead thieves.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee agreed to the changes – which would normally be frowned upon because the hall is a Grade 2 Listed building – after hearing that lead thieves had repeatedly struck in recent times.
CCTV cameras have been approved in the past, but because of the size of the Walton Estate and the hall itself it is difficult to provide adequate cover.
Lead has been stolen from the roof on several occasions lead to damage from rainwater.
Now the lead flashing and sheeting will be replaced by a substitute material which has no second hand value and as such is of no interest to thieves.
