LESS than a year since work began on the regeneration of a derelict shopping parade at Harrison Square, Dallam, Warrington, the first new homes are ready to move into.
The redevelopment of Harrison Square and the Harrison Centre by Torus is a pivotal part of an initiative by Warrington Borough Council to regenerate the area.
To celebrate this milestone achievement in the revitalisation of Bewsey and Dallam, Torus group director of finance and investment, Howard Roberts and Torus chair Graham Burgess revisited the site with Council Leader Terry O’Neill and Ward Councillor Tom Jennings.
At Harrison Square, the disused parade of shops has been replaced by stylish new bungalows and two new shops.
Where the former Harrison Centre stood, a further 21 new homes are ready to welcome new residents.
The two phase redevelopment by Torus will see a total of 65 new homes delivered. All for local people and all for an affordable rent.
Torus chief executive Rob Young, said: “We are thrilled to have been involved in this project which has transformed a rundown area, boosted housing stock and put new shops at the heart of a busy community.”
The Harrison Square site is one of several Torus developments in the Warrington area that are making more affordable homes, for rent and sale, available to more people.
In December 2017 the group handed over the last properties at flagship development, Ash Acre Meadows in Latchford where homes for rent and sale were snapped up in record time.
In Padgate, the site of the former Bayleaf Restaurant is being redeveloped to house an extra care facility providing specialist homes for older people, with facilities for the wider community including a hair salon, bowling green and bistro.
Meanwhile a shared ownership development in Burtonwood, scheduled to start on site later this spring, will enable local people to get a foot on the property ladder without over-stretching themselves financially.
“We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live in a home they can afford,” Rob Young explains.
“As a housing group, our focus is on providing the right homes in the right places. We plan to build 1,800 new homes by 2020, some for rent and some for sale through shared ownership.
“Any income we make from the sale of our homes is then reinvested back into maintaining and improving our existing stock and the services we provide.”
Warrington Borough Council Leader, Cllr Terry O’Neill, said: “The completion of the first homes at Harrison Square is fantastic news for the area and a major milestone in our on-going regeneration work in the community.
“This important scheme will help breathe life into the local area, providing much-needed, affordable new homes for local people. I was delighted to visit the site to see the fantastic progress that is being made.”
