A 500 name petition has been presented to Warrington council calling for a missing CCTV camera to be reinstalled at a Great Sankey shopping parade.

It follows a recent attack on a member of staff working at one of the shops on Dorchester Road.

Great Sankey South councillor Amanda King has backed residents who are calling for a new security camera by presenting the 500 signature-strong petition to the leader of the Council, Terry O’Neill and Chief Executive Steve Broomhead, which requests an urgent replacement for the missing camera.

Since the removal of the security camera, Cllr King has received an increase in the number of incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to her.She says that residents feel very strongly that, without the camera, the incidents are only set to get worse.

Cllr King’s campaign for additional CCTV was launched following a recent attack on a member of staff in one of the local shops. Together, she rallied local residents to put the case to the Council.

Cllr King, who also lives in the area and has seen the incidents first hand, said: “All of our residents deserve to live in an area where they feel safe and are able to go about their daily business without fear of anti-social behaviour. Reinstating the missing security camera on Dorchester Road will be a huge
step forward in tackling the problems we’ve seen in Great Sankey. The camera should be positioned so that it can cover both the shopping area and the  nearby car park.

“CCTV is a valuable tool in helping our local police take action against those people who behave anti-socially. I have been pleased to meet with residents and local PCSOs to take this issue forward. We are all agreed that bringing this security measure back to the area will have a positive impact on the community, and the benefits will far outweigh any initial outlay.”

Meanwhile Cllr King has welcomed the community engagement on this issue. She welcomed her constituents to the Town Hall to join her in presenting the petition to Cllr O’NeillL and they hope to see the new camera in place soon.
