Let's recycle the recycling bins

NEXT month will see delivery of new, larger wheeled bins in Warrington, to replace the existing blue bins currently used for paper.
The move is part of the borough council’s drive to step up recycling in the town to meet Government targets.
Nothing has been said yet about what will happen to the blue bins and we can only hope these will themselves be recycled – preferably being sold on to some other authority with a need for this type of bin. When you see what private firms charge for wheeled bins it is clear they still have a value to someone and we would expect our council to explore the market.
Another anomaly exists in our recycling set-up which needs to be removed if we are really serious about recycling.
Householders who take their own “green” waste to recycling centres can dump it free of charge. But if we engage a gardener, he has to pay.
This does not seem to make sense. While the council encourages ordinary members of the public to recycle their green waste, it actually discourages traders – often one-man businesses – to do the same. In fact, it could be argued that it is encouraging them to become fly-tippers.
We are talking about the same waste. The only difference is that is taken to the recycling centre by someone else.
It is time to change the regulations so that these small businesses, who often have little waste other than grass-cuttings, can use recycling centres free of charge
