Free swimming for young and old – MP

WARRINGTON should take the plunge and apply for funding to offer free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s according to a local MP.
Helen Jones, Warrington North MP, welcomed a £140 million Government fund from April next year to allow local authorities to offer free swimming for the two age groups.
She has called on Warrington Borough Council to apply.
The MP said: “These resources will be additional funds to support local authorities. Free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s will help promote sport and physical activity, help tackle obesity and benefit senior citizens, children and families.
“The capital element of the fund is designed to back up the removal of charging by allowing authorities to rejuvenate and maintain pools. The package can also be used to support initiatives such as the provision of free lessons for adults who cannot swim.”
She said local authorities must decide whether to participate in the scheme.
Ms Jones said: “The most ambitious authorities will benefit the most from the scheme and I hope Warrington will be among them.”
