JUST one week after their disappointing FA Cup exit, Warrington Rylands bounced back in style with a 3–1 victory over Stockton Town at The Quickline Logistics Arena to progress in the FA Trophy.
Two weeks ago, The Anchors rescued a point in the league when they were awarded an equalising penalty after the ball struck Calum Costello’s hand on the goal line. Today, Costello had his revenge, scoring twice before George Waring added a third to secure the win.
Rylands made their intentions clear from the opening whistle, immediately putting pressure on the visitors. Nathan Harker was quickly into the action, taking the ball off Harrison Wood’s feet within the opening minutes.
The Blues dominated the first half and created the better of the opportunities, but were unable to find the breakthrough before the interval, with the score remaining goalless at half-time.
It took just minutes of the second half for Rylands to finally open the scoring. Jawad Jebrin showed excellent determination to chase down a ball that appeared destined to run out for a goal kick. His pace allowed him to keep it in and deliver a cross into the path of Fleetwood Town loanee Costello, who made no mistake as he powered the ball into the net.
Costello doubled the advantage soon afterwards, producing a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area to put Rylands firmly in control.
The Blues continued to dictate the game and soon extended their lead further when George Waring added his name to the scoresheet.
Ben Hardcastle back in action
The goal lifted the visitors and briefly raised hopes of a comeback. However, Rylands dug deep and defended their advantage. Even with Stockton striking the post, the home side held firm to secure a deserved 3–1 victory and book their place in the next round of the FA Trophy.
Warrington Rylands must now prepare for the rearranged match away against Ilkeston next Tuesday evening.
