SENIOR figures from across the housing sector came together to celebrate the retirement of Warrington-based Your Housing Group Chair Mike Gaskell, marking the end of his long and distinguished career in the industry.
Hosted at Your Housing Group’s (YHG) head office, the event brought board members, colleagues and partners together to recognise Mike’s contribution to the sector, including his leadership at YHG, overseeing a return to the highest governance rating of G1, his mentorship of senior leaders from a range of different organisations. The celebration included a red‑carpet welcome, presentations, and a warm send-off as Mike begins his retirement.
During the celebration, colleagues and board members shared heartfelt tributes to Mike and his remarkable career. Mike Corfield, Chief Executive of Prestwich & North Western Housing Association, reflected on his memories of working with Mike and praised his commitment to improving the homes of thousands of people. Mike was followed by Simon Nunn, Executive Director for Member Services at the National Housing Federation who also praised Mike for his belief in the importance of good housing.
Mike was then presented with some gifts from the team at Your Housing Group and Jacque Allen, Chief Executive at Your Housing Group, followed with a personal tribute to Mike for his leadership of the Board at YHG and the pivotal role he has played in improvements to the organisation.
Speaking after the event, Jacque said: “Mike’s leadership, expertise and wise counsel have been invaluable. His dedication to improving lives through safe, secure housing is a legacy he can be immensely proud of. Mike has shaped the strategic direction of YHG, supported and mentored our colleagues, and championed the needs of our residents with integrity and compassion. On behalf of everyone at YHG, I want to thank Mike for his remarkable service and wish him the very best for the future.”
Jacque was followed by Bev Messinger, Chair of the Board at Your Housing Group, who spoke about the strong foundations Mike laid and the example he set through his passion for improving people’s lives.
Mike was joined by his wife and three sons for the event, who were visibly proud as they listened to the tributes from friends and colleagues. Mike then said a few words to close the event, reflecting on his experiences and restating his commitment to supported housing, speaking passionately about the critical role the sector plays in saving lives and providing stability for people at their most vulnerable. Mike also highlighted the importance of ensuring customer voices are heard at the highest levels, calling for boards and leadership teams across the sector to continue championing lived experience as a driving force for meaningful change.
Mike’s approach and overarching legacy can be summed up from one of the attendees who said ‘ you never forget the people who give you time.’
